The Subtle Side of Leadership

bobbie goheen leadership quote "Never judge someone by the way he looks or a book by the way it's covered; for inside those tattered pages, there's a lot to be discovered. "   Stephen Cosgrove

Top level leaders who remember to tap into their humanity tend to achieve more and create their own vibrant, thriving organizations. These leaders treat people from all walks of life — from taxi cab drivers to teachers to CEOs of large global corporations — with the same dignity, respect and care. Skills not learned from textbooks but through observation, practice and commitment.

Below are some simple skills you can use to improve your leadership abilities:

Smile
Be genuinely pleased and open when you meet people.

Appreciate
Say “thank you” for the others time.

Listen
When you are speaking with someone be totally present with that person. Ask how they are doing and then listen intently.

Engage
Regardless of a persons background, hierarchy, or title, ask them what they think. Ask questions to learn more and gain new insights.

Be Consistent
Treat others in the same manner in all your interactions.

Leadership is an art and requires a commitment to the practice. Is not the easiest of callings. That said, if you choose to follow the leadership path of constant growth and change you will find it a rewarding journey.

Check in with your commitment to being a leader, celebrate your successes, and add new skills where you need them.
